It’s that time of year again - time to plan the first quarter; time to vote in the new year’s board; and time to get our ducks, er, uh, Danes in a row! There is so much going on and we are excited to begin. Please join us this Saturday, January 30 at 2pm at the Beaverton Library Resource Center located at 12500 SW Allen Boulevard in Beaverton. This is the way to be heard and help be a part of making fun things happen.

The board is currently looking at dates to schedule our annual member
meeting. There will be positions on the board available and we would love
and welcome your help. Remember, a lot can be done when we work together.
Contact me or another board member today if you have an interest in helping.
Feel free to consider job-sharing, too!
Positions expected to be available include: Secretary, Director of Finance,
and Director of Events.
Upcoming Events -
Sunday, 1/3/2010 - Ross Park Romp, Vancouver, WA
Sunday, 1/10/2010 - Gabriel Park Romp, SW Portland

Sunday, 1/24/2010 - Hazeldale Park Romp, Beaverton
There has been interest expressed in scheduling another snowshoeing
expedition. Watch the forum for details.
Also, although this is not a PDX Dane specific event, for anyone
interested, the Rose City Classic dog show is coming soon. The dates are
Wednesday, January 20 - Sunday, January 24. There will be a Great Dane
double specialty on Wednesday. According to those who have been before, this
is a great day to go and really see the Danes in the conformation ring and
talk to breeders, see a wide variety of colors, and is a relaxing atmosphere
for spectators. All four days following will include conformation, rally,
agility, and more for all breeds.
Member Renewals -
Member renewals are going out in the mail/email. Being a paid member of PDX
Danes is just $25 each year (additional danes $5 each). Membership dues are
used to support local Great Dane rescues, education, and the emergency
health fund. If you have not become a paid member yet, it’s never too late!
Contact a board member today or download the membership form and send to the
address indicated.
Thank you for supporting the Portland Great Dane Community, a
not-for-profit entity.

I hope everyone has been following this thread and has marked their calendars. There is little we can do that is more important than to help save a life. That’s exactly what the Dove Lewis Blood Bank is there for. Giving people who volunteer their dogs come in every month to give blood that can save lives. Dove Lewis stores it, uses it, and distributes it to area clinics for pets in need. If you have not RSVPd yet, there is still time and we would love to have you. Just take a moment to think of your beloved pet and then think of what you would do if there was no blood to help him or her and he needed it. This is a VERY GOOD cause and it costs you nothing.
Here are the details:
WHEN: Saturday, November 7
TIME: 10am - Noon
WHERE: Dove Lewis Northwest Hospital Conference Room
WEBLINK: http://pdxdanes.com/content/forums/viewthread/208/
CONTACT: Marlie’s Mom or Vegas Rose

One of the goals for this group has always been a push for education. In the past, most of our information has been communicated on the forum in a format primarily occurring through member share and experiences. We would like to begin to change that and promote our educational goals through more formal channels. For this reason, you’ll begin to see some changes coming in the next months. Here are a couple of definitions and explanations to begin.
Romp - (definition) - lively exercise in a fenced or unfenced area designated for dogs to allow for and encourage social activity, exercise, and play. Roughhousing appropriate within the limitations set by specific owners. Most dogs who participate are younger or young at heart.
Walkabout - (definition) - an activity intended to promote proper leash walking. Handler may choose to use a behavioral aid such as Gentle Leader, Halti, harness, or other tool. Board members may provide someone with experience in dog training to give tips, talk with members about better handling practices and managing large dogs, and to monitor behaviors to ensure safety for all participants. Many participants may be Danes who no longer like to romp in the park, are those who need to practice walking on leash, and who may or may need social exposure in a controlled environment.

The next walkabout is scheduled for Saturday, October 17 at 10am. The event will be held at Mary S Young Park (http://www.portlandpooch.com/dogparks/marysyoung.htm). Please arrive a few minutes early to potty and cleanup after your dog. The board of PDX Danes asks that you come to this event open and receptive to constructive criticism and suggestion for better handling of your Great Dane. We want ALL events to be fun for members and effectively managing our large dogs is a huge component of this being possible.
Look for updates regularly for more training and educational events. We plan on having a Dane-free educational event one evening in November where we’ll focus on what to look for when choosing a Dane, what questions to ask of a breeder, and much more. This event will be free for paid members and have a nominal fee for non-paid members. Everyone is encouraged to attend as our presenter will have a lot of information to share and is very experienced with this breed.
